How to… Write Compelling Applications

Playwrights spend their lives honing a unique voice for the page, but too often lose it when it comes to writing about themselves in applications, funding bids or when communicating their ideas. At Middle Child we often see creativity lost under formal language and neutral phrasing.

This practical workshop helps you bring your authentic voice into every part of your professional life. You'll explore how to write applications, bios and pitches that sound like you. Discover how the same creativity that powers your plays can also open doors to move your career forward.

This workshop will take place in the pop-up space on Pier Street.

Lydia Marchant and Matthew May

Lydia is a writer for stage, screen and audio. She was one of eight writers selected for the BBC Writers’ Academy 19/20, led by John Yorke, and has since written for Holby City and multiple episodes of Casualty and EastEnders. She is now developing an original romantic comedy for Vertigo and Channel 5. Her debut full-length play Mumsy premiered at Hull Truck Theatre and is published by Nick Hern Books.

Matthew May is Middle Child’s literary manager, responsible for identifying and working with writers across Middle Child’s programme, both in production and through workshops and events to develop new writers.
